DI Why?

Renovation projects part one

It’s been quiet here on the blog over the last few weeks. I have started several posts, but moved them to June because we are in the middle of a renovation project on our home. Yay! (Can you hear the sarcasm?)

To be fair, this is all my doing. We have lived here for ten years and still had the construction stuff in the house. I was promised upgrades! Needless to say my patience ran out last summer.

This is what we started with.  It just was not working with two boys.  It was heart rending, but I got rid of a lot of books.  Honestly, I was just holding on to them to sway I own physical books.  I prefer the Kindle apps.  Books harbor dust and Treb is severely allergic to dust.

We started in the lower level.   The floor was at one time beige carpet. It was gross and worn out after 9 years and I wanted hard floors. After much working of feminine wiles (and whining) we selected a two toned solid bamboo. It looks amazing.  I selected a paint called Sonic silver from Behr paint and did most of the painting myself.

I am not a neat mom.  We generally have clutter everywhere.  With that said, this is the sofa we selected.  My advice on furniture shopping?  Get a babysitter.  My kids were well behaved and they were excited about trying out all the furniture.  I just felt guilty dragging them around while I was indecisive.  If your kids are not patient little souls it will be miserable.

I love this sectional.  (the sectional has its own story I will have to post about soon.) Over winter break we cuddled up under blankets and watched movies.  I spend a lot of time in the corners reading and just being near the boys.

Once the floors were done I had to repaint the trim around the doors.  The  right thing would have been to buy better trim and paint it, but we were already over budget with the extra bucket of adhesive we had to buy ($200 each I think).  I learned that the doors need to be roughed up and primed first.

I built a desk from butcher block countertop and kitchen cabinets to house all the office supplies, books, and board games that used to be in the room.  I did all the painting and sanding on these and the man helped assemble and lift things.  Robert had to buy a new drill while we where hanging these.  He dropped a cabinet on me.  (Previously he dropped the TV on me.)  I still love him.  This is by far my favorite part of the room.  We play MMORPGS and MOBA at night and spend a ton of time at our computers.  The far machine is mine.  this is where I do most of my editing.

we still have a few more thing to do to finish up down here:

  • Console table for under the TV
  • Console table for the guinea pig cage
  • Art for the walls
  • Move all the kitchen stuff back into the kitchen
  • Move all the family room stuff back in from the garage so I can put my car back in the garage
